Art & Music Therapy: Expressive Tools for Healing in Maine

Art Therapy and Music Therapy have many similar benefits. Both modalities assist individuals in expressing what is beyond words. Art and Music therapies provide an outlet for stress, decrease anxiety, teach effective creative coping skills, distract from physical and emotional pain, encourage improved social skills, increase self-awareness, and increase self-esteem. Art and Music are incredible tools and can produce a powerful release of feelings that can be healing to the body, mind, and spirit. No artistic or musical experience is necessary for people to benefit.

According to the American Art Therapy Association, Art Therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

According to the American Music Therapy Association, Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

This fall, 2018, Kate Beever, Licensed Music Therapist, and myself are working with CCSME (Co-Occurring Collaborative Serving Maine) to present a training series for clinicians called “Expressive Tools for Therapists”. We will be educating clinicians about the many benefits of Art Therapy and Music Therapy and also teaching specific interventions that can be adapted for any healthcare setting with a variety of populations. Therapists may attend one workshop or sign up for the entire creative series.

Kate and I recognize that unfortunately there are currently no clinical training programs for Art Therapy or Music Therapy in Maine, and that Maine therapists interested in learning more about these clinical approaches have to travel out of state for workshops and classes. We have both been working for several years to advocate for the Expressive Therapies in Maine and also to bring experiential educational opportunities to Maine therapists.

This workshop series is a unique opportunity for Maine therapists to add creative tools to their clinical practice. CCSME is offering this workshop series at an extremely affordable price - sign up now!!
